Director, Hillel York

The Director at Hillel York is a creative and engaging individual with a strong Jewish and Israel background, and is capable of working both independently and as part of a team. The successful candidate will be a self-starter and capable multi-tasker who will use these skills to engage students and drive Hillel’s mission, values and goals.
The position reports to the Chief Campus Officer and the incumbent is expected to maintain a strong relationship with the Toronto Jewish community and university bodies.

Student Leadership Development

  • Model positive leadership
  • Build on the current leadership model by engaging new leadership students
  • Advise and support the student leaders and their projects 
  • Identify leadership development opportunities for empowering students

Engagement

  • Be a visible Jewish presence on campus
  • Identify uninvolved student populations and develop strategies for contacting and serving them
  • Develop one-on-one relationships with Jewish students by meeting them where they live, work and/or study, utilizing creative methods to reach and engage them

Program Development

  • Support student-initiated programs; attend most programs (including evenings, weekends, Jewish holidays)
  • Play a key role in planning and evaluating all programming
  • Be an experiential Jewish educator who nurtures the Jewish growth of others through conversations and actions
  • Add accessible Jewish content and depth to programs on campus

Publicity and External Relations 

  • Develop/maintain strong relationships with the university administration and faculty at York
  • Act as liaison between the student population and the local Jewish community
  • Work with the Chief Strategy Officer to support the organization’s fundraising activities
  • Act as a campus liaison for Birthright Israel: Canada Israel Experience, including campus recruitment, overseeing interviews, data input and follow-through activities

Israel Advocacy

  • Collaborate with Advocacy Manager to provide immediate on-site assistance in managing advocacy strategies and crises, supported by VP, Public Affairs
  • Develop proactive Israel Advocacy strategies specific to meet the campus’s needs, maximizing the full array of national and local advocacy services, and supporting the Advocacy Manager
  • Collect intelligence and monitor anti-Israel activities on campus

Human Resource Management 

  • Provide ongoing staff supervision, ensure direct reports are supported through weekly check-ins and regular performance management, and serve as a conduit for information between direct reports and Senior Management
  • Provide opportunities for continuing professional training and education
  • Ensure that all staff attend appropriate conferences and training opportunities

Administrative Responsibilities 

  • Manage email list and CRM data entry
  • Manage programming and administrative budget

What You'll Bring to the Job

  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree, with some relevant work experience 
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and management/supervision experience
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines
  • Capacity to work both independently and as part of a provincial team
  • Knowledge about network management and social networking processes 
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a car
  • Well-versed in Jewish culture with access to educational resources and topics                              
  • A deep commitment to Israel and a nuanced understanding of effective engagement, education, and advocacy strategies
  • Energy, a sense of humor, flexibility and maturity
