Moving to a new city is always a challenge. For those who have made a major move, it can be disheartening to not know if Bathurst St. is east or west of Yonge St. or where to find a challah in a new neighbourhood.
Shalom Toronto, a program of UJA Federation – Jewish Information Service of Greater Toronto (JIST), is working to make the transition a little easier.
Designed to welcome newcomers to our city, Shalom Toronto offers a package of useful information about our city and our community. Included is information about Toronto and York Region, Jewish community centres, activities for children and families and much more. One of the highlights of the package is a six-month subscription to the Canadian Jewish News and a certificate for a housewarming challah from sponsoring kosher bakeries.
At the heart of Shalom Toronto are the volunteers available to speak with or email new arrivals. Long-time JIST volunteer Madeleine Smith explains, “We believe that this welcome, whether in person or on the phone or by email, can help everyone feel part of one community. We are delighted to say "Welcome to Your New Home.”
If you are new to Toronto or know of someone who is new, or contemplating moving here, please call Jewish Information Service of Greater Toronto at 416-635-5600 or jinfo@ujafed.org.
